A journalist became the first news anchor of a Saudi Arabian TV channel

Weam Al Dakheel is the first woman journalist to present the news in Saudi Arabia

A journalist from Saudi Arabia has just become the first woman to present the main news program on state television, a measure that was read as part of the process of opening and making the country more flexible.

Weam Al Dakheel 'made history' by co-presenting the news at 9:30 am on Thursday with a male colleague at Al Saudiya.

The journalist received a wave of praise on social networks, with hundreds of Twitter users congratulating her on her work and pointing out that her appearance marked a milestone in the conservative kingdom.

Al Dakheel previously worked as a reporter for CNBC Arabia and as a presenter for Al-Arab News Channel in Bahrain.

The Al Saudiya channel, formerly known as the Saudi TV Channel, is administered by the kingdom's Ministry of Culture and Information. It was recently relaunched with the aim of 'highlighting different movements that take over the kingdom', including the so-called 'Vision 2030' driven by Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The 'Vision 2030' plan of the Crown Prince seeks to modernize Saudi Arabia and prepare it for a 'post-oil era'.

As part of its reforms, Saudi Arabia is now allowing women to drive, attend football matches and take on new jobs.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman seeks to raise the female presence to one third of the workforce by the end of the next decade, up from the current 22%.
